Barack Obama’s first intervention

Barack Obama made clear in his final news conference as president that he was ready to intervene if his successor went too far.

It took 10 days.

It’s a big deal. And you sense the best way to use these interventions would be sparingly. To maintain their impact. Is this too soon?

There is a school of thought that thinks Trump is starting at a whirlwind pace to draw out his opposition’s big guns and make everyone weary of protest.

I tend to think that is to credit his strategic skills too highly. I think this weekend is the result of a cackhanded roll-out. The sort of thing that happens when a team with little political experience, headed by a populist who relies on instinct, tries to do big politics.

Cock-up rather than conspiracy.

Either way it will be a wild ride.
