So now James Harding, head of BBC News , has been given a very clear picture of what the World Service is and – more importantly – its value to the BBC as a whole. It is not just some kind of add-on. For the rest of the world, it is the BBC.

Its Future of News study has reported back

“If the UK wants the BBC to remain valued and respected, an ambassador of Britain’s values and an agent of soft power in the world, then the BBC is going to have to commit to growing the World Service and the government will also have to recognise this.”

It’s easy to blame the British government for the cuts imposed on the World Service. But the fact is that the BBC essentially offered it up as a sacrifice to save the licence fee…
