Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: The man in the mirrored ceiling

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gives press conference at Iranian Embassy in Islamabad

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was in town for the D8 Summit. He’s a regular visitor to Islamabad and it’s always interesting to see him up close – and see how the Pakistani press deals with him.

He kept the assembled press pack waiting for three hours (a new record for me in Islamabad – although at least there were spicy meat samosas on hand for emergencies) before finally appearing beneath a mirrored ceiling, oozing charisma and dealing easily with the soft questions dollied up to him. (Example: What is Iran’s secret to dealing with the US and how can Pakistan follow suit?) There were plenty of laughs and his tone on Israel and the West was generally softer than many might expect.

The whole thing ended with local journalists climbing on stage to have their photos taken with him.
